In 2018, we expanded our monitoring and evaluation service offering, in response to numerous calls for CASME to become involved in the valuation of science centres, and
science and maths education development initiatives. CASME Director, Henre Benson, was nominated to join a panel of evaluators for the Department of Science and Technology, and their network of science centres.

The increased capacity of CASME to work in this space of evaluation, knowledge production and knowledge dissemination, has allowed us to identify a gap that exists with regards to how research is conveyed to practioners. CASME has sought to bridge research and practice through the MERDaP maths and education forum.

The aim is to address issues, such as, taking interesting research and turning it into practical ways in which teachers can implement in the school setting, and asking questions to identify initiatives to implement. For example, a snap survey of six CASME project schools, which identified the need for scientific calculators. From this, the #FutureFund initiative partnership was formed.

CASME's long history of engaging in science outreach, particularly through the provision of portable laboratory kits which teachers can borrow from one of our four teachers' resource centres has given us some key insights.

One of the most important things we have learnt along the way is that teachers needs access to quality, user friendly equipment that is set up with alignment to the curriculum in mind. 

The other is that very few schools, in fact only 15% according to recent data, have access to a functional science laboratory. We also know that the historical and systemic constraints mean that a local teachers resource centre is not always the solution. For a few reasons. For one simple reason, teachers don't always have flexibility and mobility to travel to and from centres carrying the equipment. Another is that picking up equipment does not automatically mean that teachers have the confidence and skills to use it effectively as a teaching tool. For these reasons, we established Science2Go.

An offshoot of Science2Go is the partnership Umjikilezo We-Science Roadshow.
